What is Borapet?
Borapet (Tinospora crispa) is a climbing vine found throughout Southeast Asia. It’s most famous for its extremely bitter stems, which are used in traditional medicine as a kind of “tonic” for various health problems. The stems, leaves, and sometimes roots are used in decoctions, teas, or as an ingredient in certain herbal pills. You’ll find it in many old-school Thai herbal formulas.
Benefits of Borapet
- Blood Sugar Support: Traditionally used to help manage blood sugar in people with “high blood” (diabetes); some modern studies support its glucose-lowering effect (mostly animal/lab, but some small human studies).
- Liver Support: Used for promoting liver health and as a “cooling” herb to reduce heat in the body.
- Immune System Booster: Believed to help boost the immune system and increase energy in people who feel fatigued.
- Anti-inflammatory & Antioxidant: Contains several compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
- Fever & Infection: Used as a remedy for fevers and to support recovery from infections.
- General “Health Tonic”: Old folks sometimes take a little Borapet daily (usually as a tea or pill) for overall health, stamina, and longevity.
- Other uses: May help with joint pain, and is sometimes used topically for skin problems in folk practice.

Precautions & Side Effects
- Bitter Taste: It is so bitter that sometimes it can cause nausea for some people.
- Possible Hypoglycemia:May lower blood sugar too much if combined with diabetes meds. Monitor closely if diabetic.
- Liver Caution: Some rare case reports of liver toxicity with heavy/prolonged use (especially with extracts or concentrated forms).
- Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Not enough safety data; best avoided.
- Not for Long-Term High Dose: Traditionally used for short “tonic” courses, not mega-dosing for months on end.
- Allergies/Rash: Rare, but possible.
Borapet (Tinospora crispa) is a bitter, classic Thai herbal medicine, most famous for supporting blood sugar and general health. It’s loaded with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, and has a long history of use as a health tonic. Just use it in moderation, don’t mix with diabetes meds without checking with a doctor, and skip it if you have liver problems or are pregnant.
